Almost 70 miles (113 km) west of Key West lies the remote Dry Tortugas National Park. This 100-square mile park is mostly open water with seven small islands. Accessible only by boat or seaplane, the park is known the world over as the home of magnificent Fort Jefferson, picturesque blue waters, superlative coral reefs and marine life, and the vast assortment of bird life that frequents the area.
Dry Tortugas is one of the least visited National Parks. It is definitely worth the effort of getting there! We road tripped from Georgia to Key West, and I knew this destination had to go on the plan because it's bucket list worthy! You have to make reservations months in advance to guarantee your visit! You can book by ferry or seaplane! Seaplane is a little more costly but worth it in my opinion. After lots of research, we went with this option. The pros are the views from above, less time to get to the island, and no motion sickness. We opted for the half day excursion, but I'd love to go back for the full day.
If you enjoy nature, crystal clear water, a remote area with few people, beautiful white sand beaches, and snorkeling this is the fit for you! We took the short seaplane ride from Key West airport. Our pilot was incredible. He allowed my daughter to sit up front with him and she got the best seat in the house! The views from above were incredible! We got to see shipwrecks, dolphins, turtles, all the different types of land! We also took the first plane out and got to the remote island with so few people here. It was like we had it to ourselves.
We spent a couple of hours exploring Fort Jefferson and the rest of the tiny island. The architecture of old forts is always intriguing. After climbing winding stairs, you can view the island from the top of the fort. I highly recommend taking the time to do so.
Dry Tortugas is known for bird watching and snorkeling! The waters were fairly calm on one side, and we snorkeled for a bit! The beach was so nice, and we could've spent much more time if and would go with the longer excursion next time. The seaplane excursion includes snorkeling gear and a small cooler with drinks. There are no shops on the island. You have to take what you need in and take everything out. There is a small ranger store for a few items and souvenirs.
We had such a great day exploring here! I highly recommend everyone add this to your list! This has been on the top of our most epic excursions!
