Long before becoming a travel advisor, I was the queen of day trips and overnight trips close to our area in Georgia! I haven't been everywhere in Georgia and surrounding areas, but I've been to many! Often times, people would contact me and ask me for ideas! I love sharing my experiences in hopes that others get that sense of joy when venturing to somewhere new!
For years, I've told people to just drive! There are so many places to explore, and you can often do them on a budget! State parks are a great starting point! Small admission fees, pack a lunch, and a little gas money and you're set for a fun filled day! Travel doesn't have to be luxurious or costly! You make the most out of what you can afford and where you are able to visit! It's all memories and a learning experience wherever you go!
In Georgia, the north Georgia mountains have my heart! My dad's family is from this area, so I have so many childhood memories visiting. I love the south too and have a great Golden Isles blog to write up! But, for those in the northwest area of Georgia, North Georgia is easily doable in a day and so many areas you can visit for multiple day trips!
I have to say that the Blueridge area has my heart especially during fall! You just can't beat the fall foliage in this area! Temps are just right! It's an easy drive! SO many quaint little towns!
You can visit a couple of areas or take trip after trip to see many! One of my favorite areas is Gibbs Gardens. If you follow their website, they normally offer a buy one get one free annual pass somewhere around Christmas time. This is a great value and a great gift! I've only visited in the fall but it's spectacular! Here's a few cell photos from one of my recent trips. Travel and food go hand in hand! SO, if you visit be sure to stop by this Cajun restaurant for some dishes that take you back to your experience in New Orleans! So good!
Another popular activity in Blue Ridge is the scenic railway! It's amazing! And, if you book it, book during peak leaf season! Booking the longer ride with the layover in Tennessee is well worth the cost! SO many great shops, local owned businesses, and just a quaint little town! Be sure to eat at the Cuban restaurant! Oh my! It's as good as the places we experienced in Little Havana in Miami! Their rum cakes are to die for! I met the owners daughter my last trip and she said her mom but be ecstatic over my review and she's from the area.
There are no shortages of wineries in North Georgia! Too many to share but go and experience one for yourself! This one didn't disappoint! Live music, beautiful scenery, and delicious wine!
Local eating establishments are also of abundance! One of my favorites is the Toccoa Riverside Restaurant! You simply can't beat the views and the quality of food!
In a nutshell, the North Georgia mountains have something for everyone! There are so many areas aside of Blue Ridge! I love Helen, Dahlonega, Toccoa and so many others! I could go on for days from all the adventures we've had in the area from tubing the river, visiting a lavender farm, horseback riding, Babyland General, and so much more! So, do yourself a favor and visit North Georgia just once!
